Listen To Your Mother
Have you ever chosen to disregard your mother’s advice and later found yourself regretting that decision? Unfortunately, many times in the past, I did not fully appreciate or carefully follow the guidance my mom offered with such loving intent. Now that she has passed on, I often find myself looking back on those moments with a deep sense of regret and longing, wishing I had trusted her words and acted upon her advice more thoughtfully. The wisdom of mothers is truly invaluable, carrying profound lessons that remain with us throughout our entire lives, shaping who we are and how we respond to the world around us.
Today, I will be reflecting on the wedding feast at Cana. In the Gospel of John, Mary, the mother of Jesus, instructs the servants to “do whatever he tells you.” This statement takes us back to the moment during the wedding celebration when the hosts run out of wine. As a caring mother, Mary naturally wants to help in this difficult situation and turns to her son, whom she trusts deeply. Jesus’ hesitation in responding is relatable to many of us, mirroring the common feeling we experience when our own mothers ask us to do something. She still expressed to the servants with calm assurance, “Do whatever he tells you.” Her unwavering trust in Jesus and his divine power was clear and complete. Through her humble yet profound actions, Mama Mary offers a powerful example for all of us, encouraging us to place our full confidence in Jesus and follow his guidance without hesitation.
Mary's faith is deeply rooted not only in Jesus' power to resolve the immediate problem at hand but also in her profound trust in his greater divine plan, no matter what form that plan might ultimately take. She does not waver in doubt or try to control his actions; rather, she exemplifies unwavering confidence and encourages others to place their trust fully in him, following his example with faithful commitment. Mama Mary is undeniably the model of virtue. Her powerful statements, such as “Let it be done!” and the way Mary “kept all these things and pondered them in her heart,” serve as enduring guides for all of us on how we ought to live our lives in this world. She was truly a woman of action, prayer, and contemplation, embodying a balance that inspires us today.
So what can we learn from Mary? Her role is paramount in living the Gospel daily—she shows us the path through trust, humility, and love. In this light, we might well say: Listen to your mother!
Keep at it!
Keep praying. Love the Lord.
Peace and Grace.
