Did you know…..?

Father John G. Breaux Jr., a priest from the Diocese of Lafayette, La.

As you read this, we have just celebrated the 4th of July, a day filled with traditions and reflections. Beyond the BBQs and fireworks, the Fourth of July commemorates the historic passage of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress in 1776. This monumental act officially declared that the 13 established colonies were now legally separate and free from British rule. It was one of the many driving forces inspired by early settlers, including the first Pilgrims who arrived in 1620 seeking religious freedom and a new beginning in the New World.

Did you know that there is an Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS) ?

I knew about the existence of chaplains in the military and that they represent different religious denominations, but I never realized there was an actual diocese dedicated to them. Maybe it’s just me! How cool and fascinating that such a unique structure exists to support their important work!

I recently read that Father Darren Balkey, from my diocese (the Diocese of Charlotte), is preparing to serve as a Navy Chaplain Corps Lieutenant. The diocese of Charlotte provides chaplains to support members of the U.S. military in their spiritual and pastoral needs. He will be committed to offering compassionate pastoral care and spiritual support not only to Catholic service members but also to their families throughout the entirety of their military service. God Bless his dedication and service. He will play a crucial role in nurturing faith and providing comfort in challenging circumstances.

The Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS) is entrusted with the pastoral care of 1.8 million Catholics in the United States and around the world. This number includes men and women serving in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Space Force, and Coast Guard and their families; patients in Veterans Affairs Medical Centers; and employees and families of the U.S. Federal Government outside the borders of the United States. To ensure these Catholics have the pastoral care to which they are entitled by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA is the sole endorsing agent recognized under U.S. law and the Department of Defense to endorse Catholic priests to minister in the U.S. Armed Forces and Department of Veterans Affairs.   (https://www.milarch.org)

Let us take a moment to pray earnestly for all who serve in our Military asking for their safety, strength, and guidance in every mission they undertake.

Almighty God and Father, look with love upon our men and women in uniform and protect them in their time of need. Give them health and stability and allow them to return to their loved ones whole and unshaken. Be with their families and sustain them in these uncertain times.

Grant strength and peace of mind to the Veterans who have given their best for the country they love. Support them in infirmity and in the fragility of old age. Teach us to remember their sacrifices and to express our gratitude.

Manifest your tender care to those in the Military Academies who prepare for future service and to those who serve our Nation far from home. Teach us to remember the sacrifices of those whose efforts contribute to ensuring our way of life.

Bless and multiply the priests who minister to the faithful of the Archdiocese for the Military Services. Reward their generosity and keep them faithful.

Hear us as we present our prayers to You through Christ our Lord.
