Exploring Our Lady of Pompeii Through the Eyes of Padre Pio

Continuing this series of Saints and Marian devotions, one of my favorite saints is St. Padre Pio, and I consider myself one of his spiritual children. Over the years, his unwavering faith, profound humility, and complete trust in God have greatly shaped and deepened my own spiritual journey. Like countless others, I have found comfort in his prayers, encouragement in his example, and renewed hope through his powerful intercession.
One facet of Padre Pio’s spirituality that has always intrigued me is his profound devotion to Our Lady, especially Our Lady of Pompeii. As one of his spiritual children, I soon realized I would be remiss if I didn’t take time to explore more deeply the Marian devotion that meant so much to him and shaped his prayer life.
Padre Pio’s Love for Our Lady of Pompeii
Padre Pio’s devotion to Our Lady of Pompeii began early in his life. At just fourteen years old, he made his first pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary in Pompeii in 1901. It would not be his last. Throughout his life, he returned to the shrine several times, finding peace and strength before the image of Our Lady.
His confidence in Mary’s intercession was absolute. Whenever he carried heavy burdens or wanted prayers for a special intention, he often encouraged his spiritual children and friends to make novenas to Our Lady of Pompeii. He believed that Mary never failed to bring her children’s petitions before her Son.
The Rosary: His Spiritual Weapon
Anyone familiar with Padre Pio knows that he was rarely seen without a Rosary in his hands.
He prayed it continually.
He often referred to the Rosary as his weapon against evil, urging everyone who sought his guidance to pray it daily. Whether he was hearing confessions, meeting pilgrims, or resting in his cell, the Rosary was always close by.
He has been known to have said: “Love the Madonna and pray the Rosary, for her Rosary is the powerful weapon against the evils and errors of the world.”
For Padre Pio, the Rosary was much more than a devotion. It was a conversation with his Heavenly Mother, a school of prayer, and a source of peace amid suffering.
The Miracle of the Rose
One of the most beautiful stories connecting Padre Pio to Our Lady of Pompeii occurred shortly before his death.
He received a basket containing fifty roses as a gift. Taking one of the roses, he entrusted it to a devotee with instructions to bring it to the Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii.
What happened next astonished everyone.
The rose remained perfectly fresh throughout the journey. Even more remarkably, after arriving at the shrine, the fully opened blossom gradually closed back into a bud. Today, that rose is preserved in a precious reliquary at the Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii as a quiet reminder of Padre Pio’s enduring love for Our Lady and her maternal care for her children.
The story of Our Lady of Pompeii is really a story of hope.
Through the efforts of Blessed Bartolo Longo, a man whose own life was transformed through the Rosary. The once-forgotten valley of Pompeii became a place where countless people have experienced God’s mercy through Mary’s intercession.
That message is as relevant today as ever.
Our Lady invites us to bring our worries, fears, joys, and hopes to Jesus through the Rosary. Like Padre Pio, we are reminded that no burden is too heavy when placed in the loving hands of our Blessed Mother.
The more I learn about Our Lady of Pompeii, the more I understand why Padre Pio loved her so deeply.
His devotion was never sentimental. It was rooted in complete confidence that Mary always leads us to Christ. As one of his spiritual children, I hope to imitate that same trust.
May we never underestimate the power of the Rosary.
May we learn to place every intention into Mary’s hands.
And may we remember, as Padre Pio did, that every Hail Mary draws us a little closer to Jesus.
The 54-Day Rosary Novena
Padre Pio frequently encouraged people to pray novenas to Our Lady, and one of the most beloved Marian devotions associated with Our Lady of Pompeii is the 54-Day Rosary Novena.
This novena consists of praying the Rosary every day for 54 consecutive days:
Days 1–27: Pray in petition, asking Our Lady to present your intention to Jesus.
Days 28–54: Pray in thanksgiving, thanking God and Our Lady for the answer—whether it has already come or is still unfolding according to God’s will.

At your feet I humbly kneel to offer you a crown of roses—snow-white buds to remind you of your joys, each bud recalling a holy mystery, each ten bound together with my petition for a particular grace. O Holy Queen, dispenser of God’s graces and Mother of all who invoke you, you cannot look upon my gift and fail to see its binding. As you receive my gift, receive my thanksgiving. From your bounty you have given me the favor I so earnestly and trustingly sought. I despair of nothing that I ask of you. Show yourself my Mother. Amen.

Teach us to pray with faith, to trust in your Son, and to persevere in hope. Through the Holy Rosary, draw us ever closer to Jesus, that our lives may become a witness to His love and mercy. Our Lady of Pompeii, pray for us. St. Padre Pio, pray for us. Amen.
